Interpreting between two sister languages like Spanish and Italian might seem like an easy matter. But it sure isn’t (it’s not just about adding or subtracting an -s). Spanish is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world but it is not spoken the same everywhere. Depending on whether I am interpreting for a Spaniard from Madrid, someone from southern Spain, an Argentine, or a Mexican, I have to handle different pronunciations, speed of speech, vocabulary, verbs, and personal pronouns.Not only are there many varieties of Spanish, they are often more conservative than Italian. In Italian, we have borrowed English words like computer but in Spain and Latin America, they chose to coin the words ordenador and computadora, respectively.

This is true as well for film titles that are often adapted. For example, the movie Grease becomes Vaselina, and Fast and Furious becomes A todo gas. Improvising a translation in Spanish or Italian “because they must say it the same way anyhow” can be very risky and undermine your credibility. If you’re holding a cooking demonstration on pastry cooking and translate the Italian word burro (which means “butter”) with burro to a Spanish-speaking audience, you’ve just said “donkey”. Barely communicating in a foreign language is as good as not communicating at all. Take a load off your shoulders by relying on a professional interpreter.
