Generally, the type of interpreting most used at literary festivals is a combination of consecutive and chuchotage but every project is unique and we will assess together what the best solution is for you.
THE UNIQUE TRAITS OF INTERPRETING FOR THE LITERARY SECTOR
The presentation is a very important moment in the life of a book. It gives the author the chance to make their book known and promote its distribution by meeting with readers who help start a chain of buzz about it. This is why a foreign author can best be supported by a professional interpreter.
The author tells about how the idea came to them to write the book, and what events, places, and people inspired them in choosing the plot, settings, and characters. By sharing what they felt throughout the creative process, they will try to forge a connection with the audience.
Every book has its own story and opens us to a universe, the universe of the author. This means that I have to prepare for the presentation, studying the author's biography, their works, read the book that the event is about and perhaps other books by the same author (there are often references to previously books published and their characters!). I need to be aware of the experiences that influenced their writing (I study by watching their interviews or other presentations of the same book to get familiar with the anecdotes they like to tell). I need to know the vocabulary of the book and the themes the author often addresses (sometimes there are very specific terms from wide ranging realms – and last but not least – I need to get into the author's skin to grasp and convey their ideas and communication and expressive style.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
If you are organizing a literary festival and you want me to work with more than one author, you should contact me two months before the event so I can organize my preparation and have the time needed to study and read the authors' books.
If I only need to interpret for a single author during a book presentation, you can write me 1 month before the event.
I can consider last-minute requests (3 to 4 days before an event) but I can't ensure my availability. I could already be committed to another project or need more time to ensure top quality.
A true professional never comes to an event without having prepared in advance.
